IAPAM Reports on the Top Aesthetic Medicine Trends for 2012

December 21, 2011

The International Association For Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine (IAPAM) has released the Top Aesthetic Medicine Trends for 2012.  In the upcoming year, physicians will see successful aesthetic practices be those who offer “combination” treatment packages, integrating: facial injectables, medical skin care, IPL/laser rejuvenation and non-invasive body contouring.

Introduction

The IAPAM sees the market for minimally-invasive procedures continuing to grow in 2012.  Dr. Tom D. Wang, President of the American Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery (AAFPRS) concedes that “consumer interest in aesthetic procedures and treatment has continued in strong fashion.  However, some effects from the recent recession still linger.  Dr. Wang has “noted [that] some patients [are] choosing to have less invasive injectable treatments or non-surgical procedures in an effort to defer facial surgery for the time being.”  Dr. Wang has also noticed that more and more patients are doing “a lot of research online and via social networks prior to committing to procedures.  This has been fueled by the increase in the number of websites and chat boards devoted specifically to aesthetic topics.”  To capture this knowledgeable patient population, physicians will need to offer the latest aesthetic medicine procedures, utilize the most current technologies and package synergistic treatments for the most effective, yet cost effective results.

Combining Non-Invasive Procedures Gives the Best Results

Dr. Gregory Buford, recognized speaker and consultant for the Plastic Surgery industry, comments that, “as we head into 2012, consumers are becoming more savvy about which tips and tricks from their practitioners really work and which do not.”  Both Drs. Tess Mauricio, respected board-certified dermatolgist, and Gregory Buford see “more application and research on combination treatments.”  Dr. Buford offers that, “I think the direction we will take in 2012 is an extension and refinement of combination therapies we are already practicing.  More and more aesthetic providers are abandoning mono-therapy and combining medical skin care, facial injectables, and laser conditioning and offering these synergistic packages to their clients.  This “Holy Triad” of facial rejuvenation can be extremely effective in addressing age-related changes on multiple levels and produce results far more dramatic than previously seen.” Read more

IAPAM Announces Position Statement on Using hCG for Weight Loss

December 14, 2011

The IAPAM is committed to educating physicians in the industry’s best practices for hCG for weight loss. In support of this commitment, the IAPAM has prepared a position statement (http://www.iapam.com/hcg-for-weight-loss.html) on safely using hCG for Weight Loss. In summary:

- The IAPAM agrees with the FDA regarding homeopathic hCG. The IAPAM supports the FDA/FTC’s removal of homeopathic hCG from the market. Homeopathic hCG is unproven and unsafe, and was never used for weight loss in the original Dr. Simeons program for weight loss (http://www.iapam.com/dr-simeons-pounds-and-inches-manuscript.html).

- hCG on its own is not effective for weight loss. What is required is a strict protocol, which includes: the use of prescription hCG, diet and patient counseling in order for hCG to be successful for weight loss. The IAPAM has found that physician directed hCG weight loss programs are very successful. Over 15,000 patients have safely and successfully lost weight by working with physicians who follow the IAPAM hCG for Weight Loss Protocol.

- The IAPAM does not endorse prescribing hCG for weight loss unless the physician has been properly trained, evaluates every patient, and reviews a comprehensive medical history along with current lab testing.

- Most existing hCG studies are flawed. The IAPAM has found that the few studies which have found that hCG offers no benefit over placebo for weight loss, do not always follow the Simeons Protocol precisely. Read more

IAPAM Announces the 2012 Dates for Symposiums with Botox ®Training and hCG Training

December 7, 2011

Patient demand for Botox ® and other minimally invasive cosmetic procedures is at an all time high. The IAPAM is helping physicians enter this lucrative market by offering their dermatologist-led, 2-day Aesthetic Medicine Symposium with Botox ® Training. Physicians learn everything they need to start offering Botox ® and other in-demand aesthetic medicine procedures.  Today, the IAPAM announced its 2012 dates for its respected Aesthetic Medicine Symposiums and hCG Physician Training seminars.

Two recent surveys, published in the article “Impact of the Current Economy on Facial Aesthetic Surgery,” appearing in the September 2011 issue of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, reveal that “many patients are delaying facial plastic surgery and instead seeking out less-costly nonsurgical options due to the impact of the current recession.   “That the current economy is affecting patients’ choices around facial rejuvenation is not so surprising, since previous surveys from ASAPS have shown a decrease in aesthetic surgical procedures and a slight uptick in nonsurgical procedures over recent years,”  said T. Jonathan Kurkjian MD, of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, who served as lead author of the study.

Physicians considering the launch of a medspa are making a wise business decision, as they capitalize on this “uptick” in non-surgical procedure demand. To assist physicians in entering this lucrative market, The International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine’s (http://www.iapam.com)  Aesthetic Medicine Symposium (http://www.aestheticmedicinesymposium.com) is designed by physicians for physicians to support the addition of aesthetic medicine modalities, including botox ®, to an existing practice, or launching a medical spa.  This 2 day educational event showcases the most important clinical and business aesthetic medicine training.  Physicians who complete the IAPAM’s Symposium have a competitive advantage. FDA, FTC act to remove “homeopathic” HCG weight loss products from the market

December 6, 2011

Joint action is first step in halting sale of the products.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) today issued seven Warning Letters to companies marketing over-the counter (OTC) HCG products that are labeled as “homeopathic” for weight loss.

Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone produced by the human placenta and found in the urine of pregnant women. HCG is FDA-approved as an injectable prescription drug for the treatment of some cases of female infertility and other medical conditions.

The letters warn the companies that they are violating federal law by selling drugs that have not been approved, and by making unsupported claims for the substances. There are no FDA-approved HCG drug products for weight loss.

The joint action is the first step in keeping the unproven and potentially unsafe products from being marketed online and in retail outlets as oral drops, pellets, and sprays. Read more

Treatment Options for Hemifacial Spasms

December 6, 2011

15 in every 100,000 women have hemifacial spasms, a condition in which the patient has frequent and involuntary contractions of the facial muscles, according to the University of Maryland Medical School. With a hemifacial spasm, the muscle contractions occur on only one side of the face. Both women and men can have this neuromuscular condition, though women have it more often. Patients begin having symptoms of this disorder in their 40s.

To diagnose hemifacial spasms, a physician will conduct a neurological exam. Different scans may be ordered to rule out conditions that can cause these symptoms……

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke noted that the most effective treatment for hemifacial spasms is botulinum toxin injections. Read more

Are Botox Injections On Their Way Out?

December 6, 2011

A novel topical gel formulation of botulinum toxin type A is now in the developmental pipeline, and it may expand the range of cosmetic problems that can be tackled with the botulinum toxins. The topical gel, called RT001, is being developed by Revance Pharmaceuticals. It combines botulinum toxin type A with a proprietary carrier peptide that can transport the neurotoxin across the skin all the way down to the musculature. Even without an injection, patients can experience results that are similar to what we see with Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) or Dysport (abobotulinumtoxinA). It is currently being studied for the treatment of crow’s feet. The gel is in clinical trials (Phase II) and not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Read more

Men Lead Rebound in Cosmetic Surgery Industry

December 6, 2011

A recent study released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) indicates that more men than ever are undergoing cosmetic procedures including facelifts, liposuction, Botox and more.  The ASPS study showed that 1.1 million men underwent cosmetic procedures in 2010.  Economists assume the aging baby boomer generation is the boost the cosmetic and plastic surgeons need.  Dr. Tenley Lawton, a board-certified plastic surgeon based in Newport Beach, Calif. sees the trend affecting her business as well.

“I have seen more men than ever before within the last 18 months.  Here in Orange County, the capital of beautiful people, men feel the pressure to look young and feel their best,” Dr. Lawton says. Read more

HCG diet’s effectiveness debated in obesity battle

December 6, 2011

Katie Wilkinson, who started the diet after seeing a friend’s success, now tastes her cooking and spits it out.

Week after week, body-conscious Middle Tennesseans pack weight-loss clinic waiting rooms, listening for their names to be called.

They step on a scale, learn their weight and body mass index, and then collect a supply of pregnancy hormone that they’ll inject into their own fat deposits for the next month or so.

Word-of-mouth has been the HCG diet’s biggest advertising tool, with men and women booking appointments at a half-dozen clinics in Franklin, Nashville, Murfreesboro and Clarksville offering the hormone — and the 500-calorie-a-day food plan that goes with it. Read more
