IAPAM’s Botox ® Training Helps Physicians Capitalize on Botox ® Boom
August 30, 2011
As the demand for Botox ® treatments, from anti-aging to bladder control, continues to rise, physicians can capture this growing Botox ® market and greatly benefit their practices through expert Botox ® training at multi-day seminars like the IAPAM’s Aesthetic Medicine Symposium with Botox ® Training (www.aestheticmedicinesymposium.com/botoxtraining.html).
In late 2010, Botox ® was approved by the FDA to treat chronic migraine headaches in adults. The FDA announced that Botox ® injections have been shown to be effective in the prevention of migraines, which are debilitating headaches that cause intense pulsing or throbbing pain and affect about 12% of Americans. “Chronic migraine is one of the most disabling forms of headache,” Russell Katz, MD, of the FDA, says in a news release. “Patients with chronic migraine experience a headache more than 14 days of the month. This condition can greatly affect family, work, and social life, so it is important to have a variety of effective treatment options available.”
More recently, on August 24, 2011, the FDA approved Botox ® for the treatment of adult urinary incontinence, or to treat overactive bladder control, in patients with neurological problems. The FDA has said “Botox ® can be injected into the bladder to treat those who lose bladder control because of damage to the nervous system, through conditions such as multiple sclerosis or spinal cord injury.” “Allergan will try to gain approval to market Botox ® to a broader population of patients with overactive bladder,” Allergan’s CEO David Pyott reported earlier this month. Does The hCG Diet Work?
August 23, 2011
The controversial new diet using human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in combination with a highly caloric restrictive diet may help patients lose a large amount of weight in a short period of time.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 33.8% of Americans are obese. In the past 2 decades, the dramatic increase in obesity has led to not one state in America having less than a 20% prevalence for obesity in 2010. Along with skyrocketing rates of obesity are the increase of weight-related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and strokes. In fact, according to WebMD.com, obese individuals are 40% more likely to succumb to premature death than a person of normal weight. With such startling numbers, it’s no surprise that many people are searching for diets that are quick and effective - one of which is the new controversial hCG Diet.
Recently discussed on The Dr. Oz Show, the hCG Diet has been termed the Weight Loss Miracle by many, with promises of weight loss of 40 pounds in 40 days. FDA approved for fertility, human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone naturally secreted in pregnant women. While not approved for weight loss, many physicians across the nation have prescribed the hCG diet for patients seeking to lose a large amount of weight. Physicians and patients alike are divided on the efficacy and safety of the diet, thus causing the controversy surrounding the hCG Diet. Read more

Artificial Sweeteners, Diet and Weight Loss
August 9, 2011
Aspartame – (NutraSweet, Equal, AminoSweet) – It is a Non-saccharide (non-sugar), dipeptide (linkage of two amino acids, aspartic acid and phenylalanine). It has intense sweetness and provides calories similar to a protein, but with the amounts used to sweeten foods, the caloric value is negligible.
Limits of use: at high temperatures or high pH, aspartame breaks down. It is therefore better in more acidic foods and not good for baking. The half-life of aspartame (amount of time for ½ of the product to breakdown) is 300 days at an acid pH, but only a few days at a neutral pH. This is why it has been used successfully in the acid environment of sodas. Read more
