Groupon and the Medical Spa
July 27, 2011
by Cindy Graf
I listened to a webinar last night regarding the ups and downs of Groupon Social Media advertising. I know that many of you have been tempted to or have done a marketing promotion with a Social Media Site. I have had about 7 medical spas almost go under due to poorly positioned Groupon marketing. At first glance, Groupon and Social Living seem too good to be true…500 new patients streaming into your practice… all that $money$!!!! “We’ll convert them into profitable clients” you say. Most offices are not staffed properly or positioned properly on the web to handle this temporary traffic. If you include any kind of a consumable service such as Botox and Fillers, you may actually lose a lot of money. The stress on your schedule and staff may infuriate the loyal full price customers that you have already worked so hard to gain their loyalty and disposable cash dollars. Read more
FDA OKs Xeomin for frown lines
July 27, 2011
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Xeomin (incobotulinumtoxinA, Merz Aesthetics) for temporary improvement of moderate to severe glabellar lines, Medscape Today reports.
According to a Merz statement, the approval is based on the results of two multicenter U.S. clinical trials involving 547 healthy adults. In both studies, Xeomin injections significantly improved the appearance of glabellar lines in 30 days when compared with placebo. Headache was the most common adverse reaction observed.
Under the brand name Bocouture, Xeomin is already approved in 14 European countries including Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and Spain. It was FDA-approved in 2010 for the treatment of cervical dystonia and blepharospasm.
Xeomin will be available nationwide in the spring of 2012, Merz officials said.

The Third Botox - Xeomin from Merz Enters the Wrinkle Race
July 25, 2011
It all began with the little toxin that was anecdotally found to soften lines of facial expression. The term “Botox” has made its way into the vernacular, and the brand known as BOTOX® is literally a household word that is well translated in most languages around the world. Botulinum toxins work by blocking the nerve impulses to the wrinkle producing muscles to soften contractions. The result is that the overlying skin appears smoother and lines and wrinkles are reduced temporarily. The treatment is simple, effective with minimal discomfort, and patients can resume normal activity immediately. The effects lasts from three to six months in most people, and it will need to be repeated to maintain the wrinkle relaxing results desired. Read more

Quick shot replacing nip, tuck
July 18, 2011
Demand for minimally invasive cosmetic procedures showed a three-digit increase over the last decade, with Botox leading the way for those seeking to look younger or better.
As of last month, would-be patients can consider a new product that uses their own collagen cells, which are multiplied in a lab to create an injectable substance that smoothes out facial features. Injections typically cost a fraction of surgery and require much less recuperation time.
Food and Drug Administration “It’s taking hold. People are doing (injections) a lot more frequently,” said John Bull, a plastic surgeon in Naperville. “People that are looking for a modest improvement with less down time and no scars typically want to have this done. The best candidates are people with early signs of aging and volume loss.”
Laurette Agee, 51, who is general manager of a McDonald’s in Aurora, was a patient of Bull’s. More than four years after losing her husband of 26 years, Agee was ready to come out of her shell but noticed the aging process taking hold.
She did not warm to the idea of plastic surgery, so starting in February she began receiving different types of injections in her cheeks, lips and along the sides of her nostrils.
“I catch men looking at me now in a different perspective. It makes me feel very good,” Agee said. “At my son’s wrestling meets, other moms were like, ‘Did you have something done, Laurette? You look so good.’ I have no shame in saying, ‘I did this, and this, and this.’”
In the last decade, minimally invasive procedures have skyrocketed in popularity, from 5.5 million performed in 2000 to 11.6 million in 2010 — a 110 percent increase, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The best-known and most commonly used, Botox, jumped 584 percent. Read more
Botox Training with the IAPAM Helps Physicians Boost Profits
July 8, 2011
As the demand for minimally-invasive treatments continues to rise, specifically the demand for Botox, dermal fillers and other cosmetic injectables, physicians who are expertly trained through multi-day botox training programs like the IAPAM’s Aesthetic Medicine Symposium, can capture this growing market and greatly benefit their practice’s bottom line.
As reported by the IAPAM and other aesthetic medicine associations, there were 11.6 million cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures performed in 2010, and 5.4 million of these were botox injections and other neurotoxin treatments.
The IAPAM (http://www.iapam.com) confirms this trend, noting that each of their Aesthetic Medicine Symposiums (http://www.aestheticmedicinesymposium.com) and its Botox and Dermal Filler Bootcamps and its Advanced Filler Training programs has sold out in the first half of 2011. Furthermore, while Botox training is still very popular, more and more physicians are also appreciating that the key to a successful and profitable aesthetic practice is not just offering Botox treatments, but also other skin rejuvenation procedures including: chemical peels, microdermabrasion, Laser/IPL skin rejuvenation, and physician-directed skin care. Secrets to a Profitable Aesthetic Medicine Practice
July 7, 2011

As the Executive-Director of the IAPAM (International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine) I receive many calls and emails from physicians looking at entering the aesthetic medicine industry. The most common request is for Botox training, many believe by only offering Botox, they will be on their way to vast riches. The reality is that you certainly need to offer Botox treatments (it has been the number one non/minimally invasive cosmetic procedure for years), but it is highly commoditized. Which means, you don’t make much money! If you are going to add aesthetics to your practice, it should be for the money. For a typical Botox treatment, the patient may require 40 units of Botox. By the time you incorporate the cost of the product & consumables (needles, gloves, saline, gauze, ice pack, office time) you have a cost of $240, but the going rate for Botox is $9/unit, so you’ve made $120. Typically a patient comes back every 4-6 months, so you’ll make $240-$360/yr from one Botox patient. Now lets take a chemical peel treatment. Your cost is $20 (product cost & consumables), but you charge $120, your profit is still $100, but you see this patient once a month instead of 3 times a year. In a year, your profit is $1,200/yr vs $300-400/yr for one Botox patient. Ideally, your Botox patient is also a chemical peel patient as well! See where I’m going! Read more
