Adding Botox to your Practice: Cash Based vs. Insurance Based Services
April 29, 2011
As Physicians, you want to move away from reducing insurance reimbursements and actually get paid for what you do! I love the analogy of, what if you walked into Target and only paid for half of the items you left with? Well, you would probably get arrested! However, this happens to physicians every day. You submit all those forms to insurance companies, and often you are lucky if you get paid for half of them. This is one of the many reasons physicians want to add aesthetic medicine procedures, like Botox, to their medical practices. The nice thing about these procedures is that they are not covered by insurance, and the patient needs to pay cash (debit or credit) when these procedures are done. Read more

Excessive Underarm Sweating Treated With Axilase or VASER Lipo
April 20, 2011
Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is now being treated with advanced technologies such as the Axilase or VASER Lipo for permanent results.
Millions of people suffer from hyperhydrosis, also known as excessive sweating. And while sweating is a normal occurrence and necessary to keep the body cool, excessive sweating in public functions can be embarrassing and a nuisance. For many men and women, this means not being able to wear the type of clothing they want or covering up with more layers, further exacerbating the situation. New technologies have been used to treat hyperhidrosis, including injections of the neurotoxin BOTOX or Dysport but these are temporary and last up to a year. Physicians are now using lasers such as the Axilase, Smartlipo or VASER Lipo to permanently stop hyperhidrosis.
Recently seen on Good Morning America, Dr. Mitchell Chasin uses the Axilase to treat patients who have hyperhidrosis. Using a laser, Dr. Chasin destroys sweat glands, therefore halting excessive sweating. Similar to this procedure, Denver Hyperhidrosis Treatment provider Dr. W. Jason Martin uses the VASER Lipo to treat excessive sweating under the arms. Read more
Some worry as popularity of hCG diet grows
April 14, 2011
A diet that uses injections of the pregnancy hormone hCG to “trick” the body into accepting an ultra-low calorie diet is growing in popularity — and controversy.
Proponents say the diet is safe and effective. But plenty of other doctors say the diet is anything but.
Kelowna, B.C., nurse Debbie Driscoll is currently on the hCG diet for the second time. During the first round, she lost about 25 pounds. She gained a few back and is trying the diet again to lose that weight and then some.
As part of the diet, she’s down to just 500 calories a day. While she says she sometimes feels light-headed, she also says she’s never hungry.
“So far I’m down 40 pounds now,” Driscoll reports. Read more
Mayo Clinic Finds Botox Eases Painful Spinal Headaches
April 14, 2011
A Mayo Clinic case study finds Botox may offer new hope to patients suffering disabling low cerebrospinal fluid headaches. The successful treatment also offers new insight into Botox and headache treatment generally. The case study was presented March 13th, 2011 at the American Academy of Neurology meeting in Hawaii.
Low CSF pressure headaches are caused by an internal spinal fluid leak. The pain can range from slight to disabling. The headaches are most commonly triggered by a lumbar puncture. The pain is caused as fluid leaks out and the brain sags. For many patients, lying down has offered the only relief, because existing therapies weren’t fully effective. Traditional treatment is a blood patch, which is just that: a patch of the patient’s blood injected over the puncture hole. Read more
Increase in Botox Training Correlates with Increased Demand for Botox Treatments
April 11, 2011
The IAPAM has identified a correlation between the 2011 increase in attendees at its hands-on Botox Training, and the growth in 2010 in Botox and dermal filler procedures. Physicians looking to combat declining insurance reimbursements are looking to add aesthetic medicine procedures like Botox, dermal filler, laser hair removal, microdermabrasion and chemical peels to their practices.
Through discussion with its members, and by analyzing recent aesthetic medicine statistics, like the ASPS 2010 Plastic Surgery Procedural Statistics and the ASAPS’s Cosmetic Surgery National Data Bank Statistics 2010, the IAPAM (http://www.iapam.com) has identified that in 2010, aesthetic medicine physicians were preforming more botox and other cosmetic injectables procedures, more chemical peel treatments, more laser skin rejuvenation, and more medical microdermabrasions vs. more invasive treatments. The ASPS reported that botox injections and other minimally-invasive procedures increased by 6% from 2009 to 2010. Also, men contributed significantly to this growth. Botox procedures increased 9% and dermal fillers treatments increased 10% for men. Finally, business from repeat customers increased by 13% from 2009 to 2010. In support of this market growth, the IAPAM has tailored its educational programs, like its Aesthetic Medicine Symposium with Botox Training (http://www.aestheticmedicinesymposium.com), to ensure physicians have hands-on botox training, and can start offering aesthetic medicine procedures immediately after attending.
