ASPS Reports Cosmetic Plastic Surgery Down in 2009, Up 69% in First Decade of New Millennium

April 30, 2010

Although it’s been a sluggish year for plastic surgery due to the economy, the long-term outlook is more encouraging. According to statistics released today by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 12.5 million cosmetic plastic surgery procedures were performed in the United States in 2009, down 1 percent from 2008; up 69 percent since 2000. Nearly 5.2 million reconstructive plastic surgery procedures were performed last year.

“The industry has experienced some economic downturn during the later part of the decade due to the recession, but, overall, plastic surgery has seen growth in the first decade of the new millennium,” said ASPS President Michael McGuire, MD. “The current economic climate will likely not have an impact on long-term growth. The largest contributor to the increase in procedures over the past decade has been the advent of injectable wrinkle fighters and other minimally-invasive procedures.”

Cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures increased 1 percent, to nearly 11 million procedures in 2009. Minimally-invasive procedures are up 99 percent since 2000. The top five minimally-invasive procedures in 2009 were:

  1. Botulinum toxin type A (4.8 million)
  2. Soft tissue fillers (1.7 million)
  3. Chemical peel (1.1 million)
  4. Microdermabrasion (910,000)
  5. Laser hair removal (893,000)

When Will “Aesthetic Plastic Surgery” Empower Men, Too?

April 29, 2010

Dr. Val Lambros is five years into a 20-year study of how the face ages. Every five years, Lambros sits a group of study participants in front of a 3-D camera, maps out their faces, and then painstakingly aligns the images to see what time has wreaked upon their pores, wrinkles, and facial structures. Lambros’ “Longitudinal Facial Aging Project” culls its subjects from those who will most benefit from its results—aesthetic surgeons. “Plastic surgeons reliably show up to meetings every year throughout their careers,” Lambros explains. At the annual American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) conference, held last weekend in National Harbor, Md., surgeons dutifully filed into Lambros’ exhibit booth to face the camera.

Lambros’ sample, while reliable, has one major limitation. “I need beautiful women!” Lambros called out to one female surgeon passing by his ASAPS booth, who agreed to get mapped. “The problem is, the vast majority of them are men,” says Lambros, who estimates that less than ten percent of his aging faces are female. “It’s a guy-dominated field. And men don’t age in the same way that women do,” he says. Lambros chalks that partly up to cultural perception, partly up to biology. “Society will see a 60-year-old guy as looking better than a 60-year-old woman,” says Lambros. “But women’s skin is thinner, too.” And Lambros’ female sample is not necessarily aging naturally: “Typically, female plastic surgeons will do fillers on themselves—the Botox and stuff,” he says. “You’ll be able to see that in the photographs, and it will invalidate some of the findings, but not all of them.” Read more

Botox Being Used by Young People

April 29, 2010

Botox has become popular even in people as young as 20 years. Earlier, it was assumed that Botox was mainly used by people older than 40 years. Many young people are regular Botox users and like the effect it has on their face.

Many Botox users are stressing that they do not want any lines to appear on their face. Doctors also confirm that earlier Botox was used to remove facial wrinkles but now it is being used to prevent any facial lines from appearing.

Regular Botox users have mentioned it is increasingly becoming common to use it and a lot of youngsters are using it frequently. The cost of an average Botox treatment is around $300 and it also depends on the area treated and the number of injections. Read more

Can Botox ace the pain of tennis elbow?

April 29, 2010

A single, carefully placed injection of botulinum toxin (Botox) can improve the pain of tennis elbow, researchers say. However, this treatment can cause temporary loss of movement in the third and fourth fingers, which may be an unacceptable side effect for many people.

What do we know already?

Tennis elbow happens when you damage the tendons in your lower arm, usually by moving your arm in a repetitive way, such as when playing tennis, raking leaves, or painting. It causes pain on the outside of your elbow, which often feels worse when you grasp something or twist your arm.

Tennis elbow usually gets better on its own in a few weeks, once you rest your arm and allow the tendons to heal. But occasionally, the pain lasts much longer, which may stop you playing sport or keep you off work.

Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a substance that relaxes muscles by temporarily paralysing them. It’s often injected into facial muscles to reduce wrinkles and frown lines. It’s also used for medical conditions such as multiple sclerosis, to relax rigid muscles. Read more

Earnings Preview: Allergan

April 29, 2010

Allergan (AGN) is expected to report Q1 earnings Friday, April 30 before the market open, with a conference call scheduled for 9 am ET.

Guidance

Analysts are looking for EPS of 60c on revenue of 1.11B. The consensus range is 58c-66c for EPS, and $1.07B-$1.18B for revenue, according to First Call. In early February the company gave Q1 EPS guidance of 57c-59c. At the time the EPS consensus estimate for Q1 was 68c. Botox sales may have strengthened as a result of the economic recovery and a rebound in discretionary consumer spending. Another positive for Q1 is seen coming from Latisse, a drug that has been found to enhance eyelash growth. Ophthalmic drugs should also be a positive driver for Allergan in Q1. Possible negative pressures this quarter may be seen coming from Dysport competing for Botox sales.

Analyst Views

On April 19, Goldman Sachs upgraded Allergan to Conviction Buy from Neutral.

Differentiation: The key to generating more business in a soft market

April 23, 2010

The economy has the cosmetic plastic surgery business sagging and in need of a real lift.

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) recently released some concerning statistics about the cosmetic plastic surgery business. In 2009, according to ASAPS, spending on plastic surgery services fell 20 percent to $10.5 billion. Further, the number of cosmetic surgical procedures  dropped by 17 percent to 1.47 million.

Certainly the worst economy since the Great Depression played a major role in the decrease. Unfortunately, it’s likely to remain as such at least through the next several quarters. Aesthetic medicine practices of all sizes now must work even harder in a competitive industry to win their piece of a diminishing – at least for the time being – market. Read more

Cynosure’s Smartlipo Triplex(TM) Technology Shows Superior Skin Tightening and Fat Disruption in Laser-Assisted Lipolysis

April 22, 2010

Research Presented at 2010 American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery Annual Conference

Cynosure, Inc. (Nasdaq: CYNO) today announced the presentation of a new study that demonstrates the clinical benefits of using a 1440 nm wavelength in laser-assisted lipolysis to disrupt fat tissue and tighten skin through tissue coagulation. The study, led by Barry DiBernardo, M.D., Medical Director of New Jersey Plastic Surgery, is one of six Cynosure-related abstracts being presented this week at the 2010 American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) Annual Conference in Arizona.

Dr. DiBernardo’s study evaluated the fat-disruption and tissue tightening that occurred in abdominal tissue treated with three separate wavelengths, including a 1440 nm laser. The 1440 nm wavelength is the heart of Cynosure’s Smartlipo Triplex, which was introduced in late 2009 as the newest member of Cynosure’s family of workstations for laser-assisted lipolysis. The Smartlipo Triplex is the highest-power laser energy device approved for fat removal by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Read more

Workers going under the knife to bag best jobs

April 20, 2010

Statistics have shown that more and more people are considering cosmetic surgery because they think it will help them climb the career ladder.

More than one in 10 people would consider having cosmetic surgery in a bid to land their dream job, worrying statistics have shown.

The figures, released by the UK’s first chat show dedicated to cosmetic surgery, MyFaceMyBody, showed how image-conscious the nation has become in recent years.

More than five per cent of people have already undergone procedures to improve their looks in a bid to get ahead in business, with two thirds of the women asked saying they believe that looks play a big part in whether they will land a good job or get promoted.

Most of those surveyed said they would alter their body (43 per cent), followed by 31 per cent who would change something about their face. Read more
