IAPAM Endorses Comprehensive Aesthetic Training

The MedSpa industry in the United States has experienced a growth rate of 133% in the past five years. Moreover, “as the current economic environment continues, the myriad of minimally invasive and less expensive procedures offered at Medical Spas, including Wellness Centers and Anti-Aging Clinics is expected to continue to garner more and more of the aesthetic medicine market,” comments Jeff Russell, Executive Director for the International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine (IAPAM). To capitalize on this profitable field of medicine, more physicians and non-physicians are launching offerings into the Medical Spa market, by opening separate facilities or turning parts of their existing practices into medispa treatment areas. Medical Spa Success Requires Continuing Education

The aesthetic medicine field is constantly evolving. Equipment, procedures and techniques are changing along with the economy.  One thing I’ve seen as a critical  factor of the most successful medical spas is the importance place on both clinical and business training. Physicians need to look at entering the aesthetic field as a journey; you are not going to learn everything you need to enter the industry in one weekend, so you need to have access to accredited on-going clinical training, medical textbooks, DVD’s and reputable on-line resources in order to hone your skills, just as you did in medical school. BMI And Increased Death Rates: Hazards Comparable To Smoking

The Lancet posted on its website a prepublication of a worldwide collaborative analysis of body mass index (BMI) and increased death rates among 900,000 adults in 57 prospective studies. Florida Atlantic University researcher Charles H. Hennekens, M.D., the first Sir Richard Doll Research Professor in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Biomedical Science, served as a major investigator in two of the large scale studies, and enrolled and followed approximately 144,000 adults. The analyses were led by the Clinical Trial Service Unit at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom where Sir Richard Doll was the Regius Professor of Medicine and Hennekens is a Visiting Fellow. Hennekens was the founding principal investigator of the Physician’s Health Study composed of approximately 22,000 physicians, and the cardiovascular component of the Nurses Health Study composed of approximately 122,000 nurses. The “Lipstick Effect” in Aesthetic Medicine: The 2008 ASAPS statistics support the notion that in tough economic times, small aesthetic luxuries are in demand

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery’s (ASAPS) recently released report, 2008 Statistics on Cosmetic Surgery, outlines that 8,491,861 non-surgical procedures were done in 2008. However, this is a reduction of 11.7% over last year, and interestingly the only three growth non-surgical procedures were Calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiance) injections which was up 3%, chemical peels which were up 2.9% and laser skin resurfacing which had increased by 12%.

Jeff Russell, Executive Director of the International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine (IAPAM) comments that, “it is expected to see a downward trend in non-surgical procedures because many of these procedures are not being done in a plastic surgeon’s offices. These statistics are compiled from a survey of members of the ASAPS, however, many of these offerings are being preformed by professionals outside the membership of the ASAPS.” Russell further reminds us that , “not all these procedures are being performed by physicians. Since the public can get many of these procedures in both medical spas and physicians’ offices, and some of these treatments like mircodermabrasion and chemical peels may be delivered by non-medical professionals in a non-ASAPS member medical spa.” Indeed, the ASAPS supports this analysis. Among the 894 Board Certified physicians surveyed, the ASAPS found that “over fifty-three percent of cosmetic procedures in 2008 were performed in office-based facilities; 26 percent in freestanding surgicenters; and 19 percent in hospitals,” states the 2008 ASAPS report. New Type Of Botulinum Toxin, Reloxin, Appears To Be Well Tolerated And May Help Reduce Forehead Wrinkles

Injections with a new type of botulinum toxin appears to be well tolerated and may help to improve the appearance of moderate to severe forehead lines with no evidence of diminishing treatment response over 13 months, according to a new report.

Injecting low doses of Clostridium botulinum toxin type A is a generally accepted method for treating lines on the face, according to background information in the article. A new botulinum toxin type A (Reloxin) has been used to treat neurological disorders outside the United States for more than 15 years and is approved to treat wrinkles in 23 countries. In the United States, this product has been under investigation for the treatment of glabellar or forehead lines since 2002, according to the authors. Read more

               

ASAPS Releases 2008 Cosmetic Procedures Statistics

The ASAPS (American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) reports 10.2 Million Cosmetic Procedures in 2008. The Aesthetic Society, after collecting multi-specialty procedural statistics since 1997, says the overall number of cosmetic procedures has increased 162 percent since the collection of the statistics first began. The most frequently performed nonsurgical procedure was Botox injections and the most popular surgical procedure was breast augmentation. Read more

Medical Spa Success Requires Patient Financing

As I continue this series on “Medical Spa Success,” I thinks its very important to discuss offering patient financing options.   In today’s economy its more important than ever to offer your patients multiple financing options for aesthetic procedures, it’s not uncommon for a patient to pay for some of the procedure in cash, check, credit card, and a patient financing credit card. It’s important that you have them all available and clearly displayed. This is the reality of offering cash-based medical spa procedures. One thing you are going to also need to do is offer your patients a patient financing program (a credit card for cosmetic procedures done at a medical spa or doctors office). Research Shows VASER Lipo Results In Excellent Skin Tightening

Preliminary findings from a multi-center clinical study measuring postoperative skin retraction in VASER Lipo patients shows 40% to 60% tightening. Patients in the study underwent body contouring treatments in one or more body areas with the VASER Lipo System. Skin markings were placed on areas to be treated and measurements have been taken over a 6 month period. Read more
