New standards urged for treatment at spas

Legislators and doctors are pushing tougher rules for the exploding medical spa business in Massachusetts, saying some of the thousands of consumers who receive laser treatments, chemical peels, and other procedures are being put at risk by unlicensed and untrained providers.
These spas, which offer medical procedures along with traditional beauty salon services such as hair care and pedicures, would have to be licensed by the Department of Public Health, according to a proposal from a legislative task force. And laser skin procedures, including the removal of age spots and tattoos, would have to be performed by a doctor or nurse with special training. Read more

Study says Dieters have lots of good options

BOSTON (Reuters) - Advocates for various diets may argue that theirs is the best and healthiest way to lose weight but a study published on Wednesday suggests that many of them are effective. The findings show that would-be dieters should choose the weight-loss program that they are most comfortable with, as long as it is high in fiber and low in calories and saturated fat. Read more

Board Certification in Aesthetic Medicine Lacking

There has been great discussion regarding the Board Certification of Aesthetic Medicine. Currently the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) does not offer a board certification in Aesthetic Medicine. The ABMS currently states that “antiaging is not a medical specialty,” and therefore no association or organization can officially be offering “board certification” in aesthetic medicine at this time. FDA takes second critical look at topical anesthetics

WASHINGTON — The results of a recent study has prompted the FDA to issue its second warning in two years about the potential dangers of using topical anesthetics for pain relief from medical tests and conditions. The most recent warning also begs the question of whether the first advisory was as effective as it might have been in getting across its message regarding the use of topical anesthetics containing drugs such as lidocaine, tetracaine, benzocaine and prilocaine.
