No-knife facelifts

October 31, 2008

Why is the face I see in the mirror every morning suddenly looking droopier? It couldn’t have occurred overnight, but why does everything suddenly appear to be looking down, not up? ‘Your skin is made up of strands of collagen and elastin fibres and both change during the ageing process and as a result of sun damage,’ explains IAPAM member Dr Alek Nikolic, who has a practice in Chelsea Village, Cape Town. The buzz about metrosexuals may have died down, but men’s desire to look good certainly hasn’t. These days, many are turning to Botox to smooth out frown lines and forehead creases. IAPAM member Dr. Michael Stanford, co-owner of Embrace Spa in St. Petersburg, Fla., said the percentage of his Botox clients who are men has grown from just a handful five years ago to about 10 percent. IAPAM’s Aesthetic Medicine Symposiums Help Physicians Open Profitable Med Spas

October 31, 2008

In today’s economy, and given the growth in accessibility and acceptance of aesthetic medicine procedures, it is very important that physicians understand: “what is working” and “what is not.” in their practices, in order to have a successful and profitable medical spa. Demand for Cosmeceutical Products to reach $8.2 Billion in 2012

October 30, 2008

Demand for cosmeceutical products is expected to increase 7.4 percent per annum to $8.2 billion in 2012, driven by an aging populace seeking to maintain the appearance of youth in an image-conscious society.  This, coupled with an increasingly competitive work force, a steady stream of new and technologically advanced product introductions and the continuation of astute marketing, will bode well for cosmeceuticals.  Limiting further gains will be growing pricing pressures.  In addition, cosmeceuticals face intense competition from alternative treatments (e.g., laser resurfacing and various cosmetic surgical procedures). These and other trends, including market share and product segmentation, are presented in US Cosmeceuticals, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry research firm. Replacing it was a plumper, more filled-out face, he wrote, not unlike “a slightly tired but still very stylish down-filled sofa that looks almost new if you keep those cushions fluffed.” Read more

BLU-U Maker Ends PDT Levulan Study after Poor Results

October 28, 2008

DUSA Pharmaceuticals, Inc. ® announced today results from its Phase IIB clinical trial to compare the safety and efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) using DUSA’s BLU-U® brand light plus vehicle containing Levulan® (aminolevulinic acid HCl) to that of PDT using the BLU-U plus vehicle without Levulan (the “control group”) in patients with moderate to severe facial acne vulgaris. The study demonstrated that both treatments were safe and well tolerated with no serious adverse events. While both groups showed a statistically significant reduction in inflammatory lesions from baseline, the results did not demonstrate a statistically significant difference between the Levulan PDT and control groups. Based on these results, DUSA will not pursue further clinical development of Levulan PDT in combination with BLU-U for moderate to severe acne. Read more
