Look through your local newspaper and you will see many, if not several, ads promising a more beautiful body with liposuction, a more attractive face with Botox and wrinkle fillers, fuller breasts, less hair and it goes on and on. As if that’s not confusing enough, some are from core specialties in private practice but some are from “rejuvenation centers” run by vascular surgeons or medi-spas run by business people who have a designated medical director who might be a family practice physician or it could even be a salon/spa who has a traveling physician show up periodically to perform treatments and leave. Study shows value of food diary in losing weight

WASHINGTON (Reuters Life!) - Keeping a food diary — a detailed account of what you eat and drink and the calories it packs — is a powerful tool in helping people lose weight, U.S. researchers said on Tuesday.

The study involving 1,685 middle-aged men and women over six months found those who kept such a diary just about every day lost about twice as much weight as those who did not. Read more

Today the New York Times reports on a jaw-dropping addition to the medical spa trend.

Now comes the first medi spa in Manhattan wholly dedicated to strengthening and grooming a woman’s genital area. Phit — short for pelvic health integrated techniques — is to open this month on East 58th Street.

Dr. Lauri Romanzi, a gynecologist who performs pelvic reconstruction surgery, said she came up with the idea for the spa one day while walking by an outlet of BriteSmile, the tooth-whitening chain. She liked that the stores cater to people with healthy teeth. Read more

Thermage to buy Reliant Technologies for $95 million

July 7 (Reuters) - Aesthetic medical device maker Thermage Inc (THRM.O: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said it would buy privately held Reliant Technologies Inc, a provider of cosmetic laser skin treatment, for about $95 million in cash and stock, sending its shares up as much as 10 percent.
